Why did it take so long for Fabric to snare Surgeon for a mix CD? Well after nearly a decade and over 100 releases, the go-to label for bleeps has finally secured techno innovator Anthony Child for Fabric 53, and it’s a belter.
Surgeon’s Fabric podcast last year showcased the influences on his 15-year career, joining the dots between 1960s tape experiments from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop’s Delia Derbyshire, through Scott Walker, Bauhaus and Soft Cell. This mix has its eye on the road ahead though, rounding up the current big-hitters for a techno jolt as relentless as the English producer’s live sets.
It moves seamlessly between classic Detroit capers from the likes of Robert Hood, to acid brain wrongs from Ancient Methods and Surgeon’s own industrial strength Compliance Momentum. There are a few breathers on the steel drums on Ital Tek’s Spectrum Falls and Subeena’s whirring dubstep, but mostly it’s four to the floor that’ll have you scouring the listings for the nearest techno night.
