Don’t expect a safe space at a Lauryn Hill show

The 1998 album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is one of the all-time classics — but it’s also an album that Hill ran from for nearly 20 years. It’s a classic crossover record that blurs the lines between rap and soul, and became a year zero piece for most of today’s R&B artists.

It’s got the hits Doo Wop (That Thing), Ex-Factor and Everything is Everything but it’s legacy is greater than the MTV smashes. It’s still her only solo LP, as she takes the ‘difficult second album’ cliche to new lengths.

Still, she’s finally celebrating the album on this 20th anniversary tour but don’t expect a slick, safe space to have a singalong. She’s known for being late, reworking her songs and lecturing about the general mess of the world, which is only getting worse.
