KUBLAI KHAN was an iconic 13th century Mongolian ruler who embraced religious tolerance and bureaucracy in contrast to his warlord great grandfather Genghis.
A ‘woke’ Mongol leader is all relative compared with the predecessor, in the same way as Texas metalcore band Kublai Khan TX can sing anti-racist and social justice songs while begging maniacs in the front row to rips each other’s heads off.
They take their cues from classic late 90s and early 2000s bands like Hatebreed, but really taking the visceral downtuned raw heaviness to extreme levels. There’s a genuine colossal weight to the riffs and quicksand-slow breakdowns, with frontman Jamey Jasta screaming through it with absolute brutish intensity.
