The worst kept secret in Irish goth land was finally let out today, as the venue for The Cure’s return to Dublin was announced. After teasing the date on social media last week, Robert Smith and his back-combed cohorts revealed that they’re playing Malahide Castle in Dublin next Saturday, June 8.
Tickets go on sale next Wednesday, October 10, for €69.50 — but you get a lot of Cure for your buck — at their last Irish show, headlining Electric Picnic 2012, they played an eyeliner-melting 39 songs (I needed to zoom out to -50% on desktop to get that screenshot) And with the show billed as “40 years of hits and more”, expect a marathon setlist full of outliers. Older heads might remember them playing way past the curfew with deep cuts at Oxegen 2004 — making up for David Bowie pulling out.
So expect over 30 songs, including the usual smashes like Friday, I’m In Love, The Love Cats and Close To Me, but plenty of album cuts and all-time indie disco classics to send a few chills down the spine as well.
