Hamburg DJ Helena Hauff has released one of the electronic albums of the year in Qualm, a visceral slab of analogue electro with a punk edge, and hands-dirty track titles like Fag Butts in the Fire Bucket and Primordial Sludge.
Qualm, and her string of other 10/10 releases still mightn’t eclipse her allure as one of the most respected DJs of the last five years, with sets that grab everything from electro and techno, to industrial, obscure dark pop and hard-edges New Wave. Her 2017 EP Have You Been There, Have You Seen It, is another example of crucial machine-tooled electro that also displays her knack for evocative titles and concepts, beyond the typical abstractions.
