You never quite know what you’re gonna get with the Brian Jonestown Massacre

If you’ve seen the 2004 music documentary Dig!, you’ll know the bitching and high-wire tension between the Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre scored all the bullseyes over the actual music.

Jonestown leader Anton Newcombe claims he was miscast as a pissed-up megalomaniac running his band into the ground with erratic and confrontational live performances.

In fairness it didn’t seem that far from the truth — Newcombe has sacked nearly as many members as Mark E Smith of The Fall — there’s even a past members Wikipedia page.

With 18 albums since 1995 expect it to be a bit erratic, but it’ll be mostly loud, shoegazey, psychedelic and droney, with a few outbursts from Anton.

I saw the Brian Jonestown Massacre a few months ago at La Route du Rock, and it did feel a bit half-assed, with a precursor happening when Anton shuffled on in the early evening to do a guest spot with The Limananas and he read his lyrics off a cue card like a shit best man at a wedding. Still, even if the headline slot was a bit dirgy and drab, it was LOUD as fuck, I think they’d four guitarists on stage. So at least there’s that…

  • The Brian Jonestown Massacre play the Academy in Dublin tonight (Friday). Tickets 26, here.
