Julia Holter’s constant reinvention

Julia Holter’s latest album Aviary opens with Turn the Lights On – a wall of sound that sounds like a passage in a Swans song when they’re in full transcendent mode.

And it gets more disarming as it progresses – it’s one of the most inventive and experimental records of the year, veering from modern composition to medieval arrangements, piano ballads, buddhist chanting and serene electronica.

Her last tour had a ‘bit’ that was apparently as intense as My Bloody Valentine’s so-called ‘holocaust section’, that forced some people to leave early, but hopefully the Button Factory is up to it.
