Boomelant – TARŁO: An EP made from porn sounds that’s actually quite SFW

I found this electronic curio while stuck in a Bandcamp wormhole, digging around “field recordings” tags, trying to find some Chris Watson-type nature recordings to help me sleep.

But instead of the ambient sounds of melting glaciers, tweeting birds or chattering jungle insects, I came across this EP, with the simple description: “99.99% of human voices used in TARŁO EP were found in +18 movies.” How could I not?

Turns out it’s not some weirdo graphic sleaze-fest but a tasteful (in production at least) and inventive six-track electronic EP with quite a few nods to 90s Braindance acts like Global Goon, Luke Vibert and the more abstract edges of Ed DMX. Boomelant is Polish producer Dominik Dudek, who works from a palette of psychedelic synth leads, ambient drones and gentle breakbeats.

The vocal tics are clearly porn shrieks and moans once you know, but they’re twisted and manipulated into electronic smithereens and blips, in a similar way to the playful plasticine voices on Global Goon’s Family Glue. Also, some of the field recordings are actually ‘nature’ sounds like birdsong, whistling wind, trickling water and distant human voices (the 0.01% that’s not smut). One warning though – there’s a very NSFW moment around the 0.38 mark on track three.

There’s not much artist info available, apart from knowing Dudek is from the city of Kolobrzeg, and this passage in the bio, translated from Polish: “The term “bumelant” states for a person that constantly avoids work- either regular employment or effective work at their workplace; somebody who is lazy and neglects their duties”.

He’s got a Facebook page as well that’s only just been active since January 2. Get involved.
