Jay Electronica’s an Eternal enigma

New Orleans rapper Jay Electronica is a social media pioneer of sorts — first making his name on MySpace with his viral (at least for those days) beatless composition Act I: Eternal Sunshine (The Pledge), forged out of the soundtrack to the cult movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Since then he’s conserved an underground status despite working with blockbuster producers such blaze and signing to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. His label boss has even been known to storm the stage for a few bars on occasion.

In an era of hip-hop over-saturation and giddy self-promotion, Jay’s an enigma — never gifting Jay-Z an album, with his discography so far only made up of two mixtapes, six singles and a handful of (belter) guest verses. He does have a good round-up compilation, What the Fuck is a Jay Electronica, grabbing together his best bits, from the dirty soul of Exhibit A and Exhibit C, to experiments with verses over soundtrack cut-ups.
