Soda Blonde cut the Small Talk at the end of the year

Dublin act Little Green Cars called it a day in 2019, after a few years building up a a grassroots following with their subtle indie-rock with nods to London Grammar and The xx.

Four of the band regrouped — minus joint songwriter and singer Steve Appleby — to quickly form Soda Blonde fronted by Faye O’Rourke.

Soda Blonde’s new electronic pop direction is launched from the songs O’Rourke had been writing towards the end of Little Green Cars, inspired by Karen Carpenter, Annie Lennox, and contemporary alt-pop artists such as Dev Hynes, Lykke Li and Little Dragon.

The Dubliners carry on some of their older band’s ear for a Fleetwood Mac-style AOR hook, and sprinkle it with an even greater new wave pop shine, and their debut album Small Talk was one of the big critical hits of the year.

Soda Blonde play Whelan’s tonight (Thursday).
