It seems odd that Florida hip-hop star Denzel Curry made his name as a figurehead in SoundCloud rap — with him crossing over into the relative mainstream with reviews and interviews on all the big music sites and selling out gigs as far away as Dublin.
Curry transcends the lo-fi production, ‘mumble rap’ smoke and mirrors and shock tactics of the form, with more introspective rhymes and a three-act album TA13OO (‘Taboo’) that punches way above the glitchy underground.
Guests on the record include fellow mavericks like JPEGMAFIA, and his live shows don’t suffer from the curse of half-assed MC performances — with reports of punk and grime vibes at recent shows.
