Post-hardcore punk experimentalists Fugazi are the least likely band to reform for a cash grab — after 16 years as the ultimate DIY act and capping gig tickets at barely break-even prices.
But even if the quartet have been on indefinite hiatus since 2003, two out of four ain’t bad, and bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty are the backbone of The Messthetics, along with jazz guitarist Anthony Pirog.
There’s no concessions to nostalgia here — they get lost tightly wound polyrhythmic instrumental jams while always staying on point and locked in a thrilling groove.
- The Messthetics play Voodoo in Belfast tomorrow (Saturday) and the Grand Social in Dublin on Sunday.
